Where automotive belts work

Every modern vehicle relies on belts to move power around the engine bay. They handle two main jobs:

Timing drive

The timing belt synchronizes the camshaft and crankshaft so the valves open and close in time with the pistons. Precise tooth engagement keeps engine timing accurate.

Accessory drive

Ribbed (PK) and V-belts drive the engine's accessories — alternator, water pump, power-steering pump and air-conditioning compressor — transferring power smoothly and quietly.

Caring for your belts

A few simple habits keep a belt drive reliable and prevent unexpected failures.

Inspect

Check regularly for cracks, fraying, glazing, missing ribs or teeth, and oil contamination. Watch for misalignment and listen for squeal or chirp.

Clean

Keep belts and pulleys free of dirt, debris and oil. Contamination speeds up wear and causes slip.

Tension

Set tension to specification. Too loose causes slip and heat; too tight overloads bearings and cords.

Replace

Replace worn or damaged belts — and the tensioner and idlers with them — before they fail. Follow the vehicle's service interval.

  • Squealing, chirping or slipping under load
  • Fraying edges or exposed tensile cords

Common questions

How often should a belt be replaced?

Follow the vehicle manufacturer's interval. As a guide, accessory belts are often inspected from around 60,000 km, and timing belts are replaced on a fixed schedule — always confirm the figure for the specific engine.

Can I match a belt by a competitor code?

Yes. Use our cross-reference to convert a Gates, Continental, Dayco, Bando or Optibelt code to the matching EGP part, then confirm pitch, width and length before ordering.

What's the difference between a timing belt and a ribbed belt?

A timing belt has teeth and synchronizes the valve train; a ribbed (PK) belt uses lengthwise ribs to drive accessories by friction. They are not interchangeable.

Should I replace the tensioner with the belt?

Yes — a worn tensioner or idler shortens the life of a new belt. Replacing them together is best practice, which is why timing kits bundle them.

Why does one size fit many vehicles?

Belt sizing is defined by profile, width and length — not by vehicle. A single size can suit many engines, so always verify the dimensions against the OE catalog before ordering.
